Prof. Dr. Zane Berzina

Professor for Conceptual Development of Materials and Surfaces, Textile and Surface Design Department, weißensee kunsthochschule berlin

Zane Berzina is higher education professional with an international track record working on projects at the intersection of design, art, science, technology and society fostering design driven innovations. Her research and teaching synthesise concepts related to the fields of new material ecologies, soft technologies, circular economy and digitalization. With a focus of, how these practices influence our cultural and technological context, by giving visual, material and conceptual form to these societal changes.

She holds a PhD from the University of the Arts London. Berzina has exhibited her work worldwide in renowned venues such as FACT – Foundation for Art & Creative Technology, Liverpool, The National Art Museum of China, Beijing, V&A Museum, London or The State Art Museum Moscow amongst the others.

After taking up the Professorship in 2008, Berzina co-founded eLab – Laboratory for Interactive Technologies, greenlab – Laboratory for Sustainable Design Strategies and DXM – Design and Experimental Material Research unit. As part of DesignFarmBerlin team she mentors design-driven start-ups. She is the initiator and director of numerous multi-partner research projects funded by BMBF on behalf of weißensee kunsthochschule berlin in the context of the research consortiums smart³ and futureTEX. She is also a member of the advisory boards of the Federal Ecodesign Award and DiGiTal – the Berlin University Programme for Women Scientists and Artists.
